Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Child labor remains a pressing issue in many parts of Nigeria, including Toto Local Government Area, Nasarawa State. Films, as influential forms of media, have been used to highlight societal issues, including the plight of children subjected to exploitative labor (Okonkwo & Musa, 2023). By dramatizing real-life scenarios, films can draw attention to the causes, consequences, and potential solutions to child labor. This study investigates the effectiveness of films in raising awareness and promoting action against child labor in Toto.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite national and international efforts to combat child labor, it remains prevalent in Toto, where poverty and limited access to education drive many children into exploitative work. Films have the potential to complement these efforts by sensitizing audiences and inspiring change, but their impact in this regard has not been adequately studied (Abdullahi & Bello, 2024). This research examines how effectively films highlight child labor issues and influence perceptions in Toto.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the depiction of child labor issues in films consumed in Toto.
  2. To assess the impact of films on residents’ awareness of child labor issues.
  3. To explore the challenges and opportunities in using films as tools for advocacy against child labor.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How are child labor issues portrayed in films consumed in Toto?
  2. How do films influence residents’ awareness and attitudes toward child labor?
  3. What challenges and opportunities exist in using films to advocate against child labor?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Films depict child labor issues in a manner that resonates with audiences in Toto.
  2. Viewers of films addressing child labor demonstrate increased awareness and concern about the issue.
  3. Challenges such as limited access to films hinder their effectiveness in advocacy efforts.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study contributes to the understanding of how films can serve as advocacy tools for combating child labor. Its findings are valuable for filmmakers, activists, and policymakers seeking to address child labor through media.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to examining the effectiveness of films in highlighting child labor issues in Toto Local Government Area, Nasarawa State. It focuses on audience perceptions and the thematic content of selected films.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Films: Cinematic productions used to convey stories and address societal issues.
